Music developed a lot during the Baroque period and the music began to follow strict rules of harmony and tonality. Like the architecture of the day the music was highly decorated and ornate. Small chamber orchestras were created and used a predominantly string sound with a few wind and brass instruments. The harpsichord, the forerunner of the piano, was invented and used throughout this period.
Music Style
Instruments
  • Birth of modern Orchestra - Chamber Orchestra
  • Harpsichord (Keyboard instrument) used extensively in Baroque music.
  • Orchestral music has a mainly string sound (violins, violas, 'cellos, double bass)
  • Harmony developed into major and minor keys and music follows a clear structure (Binary Form - AB, Ternery Form - ABA)
  • Concerto Grosso Form developed (orchestra with a group of soloists)
  • Use of terraced dynamics (suddenly loud / suddenly soft)
  • Lots of ornaments and decorations in the music (trills etc)
  • Music is often contrapuntal and uses sequences and imitation and long flowing melodies
  • A few wind and brass instruments used but NO CLARINET as this was invented later
  • Harpsichord - a keyboard instrument which could only be played at one volume - loud or soft.
  • Viols are replaced by the violin family
  • Flutes/oboes/bassoons used in the woodwind section of the orchestra
  • Trumpets, french horn, trombones used in the brass section of the orchestra
