GNVQ UNIT 9 - Musicianship

Use this sheet as a check list and try to include information on each aspect.

Additional Information
Front Cover Create a front cover for your portfolio. Include your name, title, unit,design etc.
Contents Page You need a list of exactly what you have included in the folder. Include page numbers and set it out clearly.
Brief Diary / log Write a diary of your progress in rehearsals. Start by noting down a few ideas to give a brief overview of what you did in each rehearsal. From this list you can create a few more detailed versions of what you are trying to achieve.   Click here for template
Diary / Log From the notes on your chart write more detailed accounts of what you practised in rehearsals, individually or in a group. Your diary must be a reflective account.Try to do this once a week. You need to:
  • show commitment and adequate preparation for your rehearsals.
  • know what you are trying to achieve in each rehearsal (aims).
  • understand what went well / what didn't go well and explain it.
  • consider how to improve your work.
  • consider comments and suggestions from others.
  • use appropriate music vocabulary in your descriptions.

Music Vocabulary In your write up you need to use and show understanding of appropriate music vocabulary. You might include a list of musical words and their meanings and do some research of your own to find out new words or use the list provided here
Targets for Improvement Create a list of how you intend to improve your musicianship skills. Try to create about 4 of these throughout the course. Think about developing: * Phrasing and articulation  * Balance (when performing with others)  * Dynamics  * Ensemble Skills  * Level of performance skill (try more complex music) etc.
Improvisation You need to show that you can improvise in different styles eg, pentatonic scale, blues scale etc. Use the following chart to record your progress.  Click here for template
Observations You need to have at least 3 observations / reports about your work from staff and instrumental teachers. Use the subject reports from year 10 and 11 and peripatetic teacher reports. Photocopy these and add them to your portfolio. 
Styles of Music You need to research 2 styles of music in detail. You need to show understanding of form / structure, instrumentation and harmony. Include a list of music you have listened to, related to your style of music, and explain the features of the music. Research the background of the music and performers. Include, printed music / analysis / recorded tape of examples, if it is relevant. It would be useful to perform some of the music so you can explain the technical implications for the performer. Include pictures and articles to make it more interesting.
